SCHERING
LABORATORIES
Schering and
Genesis Logistics agree to expand their existing partnership to
include Literature and Promotional Fulfillment.
During the last
quarter of 1996 Schering Laboratories made the decision to relocate
their Eastern Distribution Center. Recent growth, created by blockbuster
products such as Claritin, required a facility that would provide
considerably more space for the distribution of pharmaceutical samples
to their sales team as well as shipments to their wholesale clients.
A critical decision
was made at the time to outsource the fulfillment of their literature
and promotional items to Genesis Logistics. Between September and
December system interfaces were researched, designed and integrated.
Realistic implementation timelines were determined that would coincide
with the overall goals and objectives of all the departments that
would support, interface and benefit from the change.
Immediately
following the selection process Genesis Logistics added key personnel,
a site location was finalized and the facility was outfitted with
a racking system, flow racks and conveyors according to mutually
agreed specifications.
During a two
week shut down, between Christmas and the New Year, 8000 pallets,
consisting of 1,300 active SKU's, were transferred from their Union,
NJ location and three off site locations into the 250,000 square
foot Genesis Logistics facility in Dayton, NJ. A complete inventory
was conducted during this time and the facility was receiving and
shipping orders on January 5, 1998.
Genesis Logistics
has been Schering's transportation partner for the pharmaceutical
sales samples since October of 1988. While pharmaceutical and promotional
materials are shipped from two separate locations, cycle orders
are picked simultaneously and combined by the delivering agent.
There is one delivery to the sales representatives, allowing for
more valuable time with clients.
Schering has
been able to capitalize on the functionality of an integrated Warehouse
Management system, which provides for enhanced inventory controls
and reduced costs while service standards and cycle times have dramatically
improved.
